As an adaptation to survive in the stagnant pools of South-east Asia, the betta has evolved a labyrinth organ, and is capable of breathing atmospheric air. Due to this and the hardiness of the fish, it is often kept in small bowls or jars.

However, being a tropical fish, it is essential that they are kept with a heater. The confined environment also entails the need for a filter. If kept in a larger tank with a proper tropical setup, betta fish will look and behave noticeably better.
